Casey O'Brien was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and attended Cretin-Derham Hall High School in his hometown.

He began his college football career at the University of Minnesota in 1993.

During his time with the Golden Gophers, O'Brien became one of the most decorated players in program history.

Over his four years at Minnesota, O'Brien set 14 kicking records and was named an All-American three times.

He was also a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, which is given annually to the nation's top placekicker.

In 2013, O'Brien was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymph nodes.

He underwent treatment and was declared cancer-free in 2014.
